CONFIRMATION 1 REQUIREMENTS 2016-17: All Confirmation 1 requirements must be completed before a confirmation 1 candidate will be enrolled in Confirmation 2
- Baptism Certificate
- First Communion Certificate (if already received)
- Confirmation 1 Fees
Grace Passes: All of the above activities are required for all Candidates. However, there are times when illness, family or other obligations can prevent a Candidate from attending a scheduled activity. Therefore, each Candidate will be given 3 Grace Passes to be used during the year. In order to use this pass, a parent must call Marc Leon prior to the event. Once a student uses 3 passes, it is expected that he/she will be at every scheduled activity. Grace Passes cannot be used for Confirmation 2 Retreat.
Confirmation 2 Overnight Retreat – January 26-28, 2018
SERVICE HOURS: Each Confirmation candidate must complete 20 hours of service work per year. Service Hour Sheets must be completed and turned in no later then April 15, 2018.
SUNDAY MASS ATTENDANCE: The Mass and the Eucharist are the very center of our Catholic faith. The obligation to attend Sunday and Holy Day Masses and to avoid unnecessary work on those days is a responsibility for all Catholics. We expect all of our Candidates to understand and accept this rule, which is based on the Third Commandment. The Confirmation classes will attend 12:30pm Mass together on the days of their Confirmation workshops.
YOUTH MINISTRY PROGRAM: Each year Confirmation Candidates will be expected to attend at least three Youth Ministry Nights (Revelations) and/or Revelations events of their choosing.
SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION: All students are required to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation during both the seasons of Advent and Lent.
LETTER TO THE BISHOP: Confirmation 2 Candidates are required to write a letter to the Bishop indicating a desire to receive, and reasons for wanting to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. It should be a statement of future commitment to study the faith and to advance the cause of Christ Jesus through His Church. Specific guidelines for the letter will be discussed on March 25, 2018. The Bishop Letter is due no later than April 15, 2018.
CONFIRMATION INTERVIEW: is held at the end of the process, to make sure all requirements are completed. This is also a time for you to evaluate the process – so that we can make it more meaningful for future students and sponsors. We want to know what helped you in your journey and what didn’t and how you might fix it!
PARENTS – We would like your final recommendation as to the seriousness of intent of your son/daughter’s Confirmation commitment. We would also like to have your evaluation of the process. Did we help your family grow in understanding of the Catholic faith and traditions? How could it be better for future families?
SPONSORS – We need to interview you at the end of the process to get your final recommendation for Confirmation for this candidate.
The purpose of the interview is to give us a chance to see if there is a “missing link” or two that we can help fill in before the young person is confirmed. The interview is not a test or a pop-quiz. It is a conversation.
Confirmation 2 interview dates and times:
- Sunday, April 15, 2018 (2pm-?) – PLC Or
- Sunday, May 6, 2018 (2pm-?) – PLC
CONFIRMATION MASS, REHEARSALS AND NIGHT OF REFLECTION: The date of Confirmation has not been given to us by the Archdioceses. The Confirmation Mass Rehearsals and Night of Reflection is usually held from 7pm – 8:30pm on the evening prior to Confirmation Mass. We will let you know the exact dates when the parish is notified of the Confirmation date. Sports and recreational activities are not an excused absence from the Confirmation Mass Rehearsal/Night of Reflection.
VIRTUS REQUIREMENT: All parents will need to complete the VIRTUS training program (child protection and safety) for their candidates’ registration to be accepted. VIRTUS is a three hour in-person training that is held throughout the year at St. Joseph Parish and at other parishes in the Archdiocese. You can find out more about VIRTUS and register for training on the VIRTUS website: www.virtus.org
PARENT FORMATION: As part of our movement towards Whole Community Catechesis, St. Joseph Parish Faith Formation has implemented a parent component for all of our programs. What does this mean? Now, instead of just your children receiving faith formation, you, too, will meet with other parents and share faith, grow in knowledge of church traditions and values and, most importantly, foster community. Parent Faith Formation attendance at any 5 programmed events or be Faith Formation Catechist, an Active member of a St. Joseph Parish Community, Outreach or Formation Group is a requirement for all parents/guardians of children in all Faith Formation Programs.
